Key considerations when choosing your cast iron cookware
A 25-30cm (10-12 inch) skillet is ideal for most households. For couples, 20-25cm works well. Larger families should consider 30cm+ or a Dutch oven for batch cooking.
Cast iron is heavy by nature. A standard 25cm skillet weighs 2-3kg. If weight is a concern, look for lighter options or consider enamelled cast iron which can be slightly lighter.
Traditional seasoned cast iron develops a natural non-stick surface over time. Enamelled cast iron (like Le Creuset) requires no seasoning but costs more and can chip.
Cast iron works on all cooktops including induction, gas, electric, and even campfires. It's also oven-safe to extremely high temperatures.
Clean with hot water and a brush (minimal soap). Dry immediately and apply a thin oil layer. Never soak or put in dishwasher. Re-season if food starts sticking.
Budget options like Lodge perform excellently for most cooks. Premium brands offer refined casting, better handles, and superior aesthetics but the cooking difference is minimal.
